On 3 October, Taunton Conference Centre buzzed with energy as over 90 educators, volunteers, and professionals came together for the South West ESOL Conference 2025. We were proud to co-organise this event in partnership with South West ESOL Conference 2025. The event, organised by Thrive, South West Councils, South West NATECLA, and the Department of Work & Pensions. It was made possible thanks to funding from South West Councils, Somerset Council, and University Centre for Somerset, with valuable contributions from Somerset Conversation Groups and CHARIS Refugees.
The conference offered a mix of workshops covering neurodiversity, trauma-informed teaching, AI in ESOL, and employability. Attendees described the day as “a great and positive event” with “a good blend of doing and listening.”
Networking was a highlight: 90% of participants made new connections, and over half made four or more. For the first time, members of the Somerset ESOL Network and South West ESOL Network met face-to-face, marking a milestone in regional collaboration.
Adding depth and emotion to the day was an art display featuring the haunting work of Ati Etesami and the CHARIS Without Borders group, reminding us that art, like language, can break barriers and connect communities.
Quote from Carrie Corfe, Senior Community Advisor
“This conference shows the power of collaboration. When we share knowledge and experiences, we create stronger support systems for learners and build more inclusive communities.”
Feedback Snapshot

- And yes… “More cake next time!”
The South West ESOL Conference 2025 wasn’t just about learning; it was about building a stronger, more inclusive community for those who support learners of English as an additional language.
Thank you to everyone who made this day possible.
