Bridgwater Together will be holding their annual celebration of diversity this coming Saturday November 15th from 11am till 3pm at Bridgwater Town Hall and the Engine Room. Bridgwater Together is a free event for all the family.
The event starts with a short banner procession from the Blake Statue at Cornhill to the Town Hall at 10.45am. The procession will be led by Indian dancer Avtar with the Mayor of Bridgwater Cllr Kathy Pearce and the Regional Secretary of UNITE the Union, Steve Preddy. All are welcome to join in.
The multi stranded programme for the day showcases music from the Caribbean and across Europe, dance from East Timor, Bulgaria and a specially devised dance from the children of Northgate School, games from around the world such as Mah Jong, Catan and Carrom, thought provoking international films, hands on art activities for young and old, a chance to have your portrait taken by acclaimed photographer Joss Barrett, useful information displays and delicious food from many cultures.
This year Bridgwater Together shares the Town Hall Theatre with the awe-inspiring GAIA, a breath-taking installation that brings our planet to life in stunning detail. Measuring seven metres in diameter and created using 120dpi NASA imagery, GAIA offers a rare opportunity to view Earth as it appears from space, floating in three dimensions. Named after the ancient Greek goddess who personifies the Earth, GAIA invites reflection on our planet’s beauty, fragility, and interconnectedness.
Organising committee member, Phil Shepherd says,
‘Sharing the space with Gaia is such a bonus, reminding us of our inter-dependence with nature and each other, that this is a more important time than ever to recognise and respect our common humanity. Do come and be inspired by other cultures, get creative if you would like to or just sit back and enjoy the programme. Whatever your preference and whatever your background, age and experience, do come along, bring your friends and family and celebrate what we have in common!’
Many local individuals and organisations are involved with this year’s event including UNITE the Union, Fuse Performance, Somerset Film, Mingle Café, Bridgwater Say No To Racism, GMB, Healthwatch Somerset, Bridgwater Town Council, Blossom, Abri Housing Association, SEED Sedgemoor, Thrive, Unison, GLADE, Bridgwater Trades Unions Council, Somerset Art Works, MIND in Somerset, Bridgwater Senior Citizens’ Forum, Bridgwater International, Stand Against Racism and Inequality, Octagon Theatre, Bridgwater Cultural Partners, Dorset and Somerset Medical Services.
